If you’re on Twitter or watching cable news whenever new GDP or unemployment numbers are released, you’d think these nuggets of statistical gold actually tell us something useful. Not exactly. As economist and New America Board member Zachary Karabell told Anne-Marie Slaughter in this podcast earlier this year, these types of numbers “obscure more than they illuminate.” Since this week features both GDP and unemployment numbers, we thought it was a good time to bring back Karabell’s cautionary words, also captured in his book The Leading Indicators.
